Associate of Arts in Education

The Associate of Arts in Education is a 2-year degree that prepares students to be an influencer and educator of the next generation in public and private schools.  By itself, the Associate of Arts in Education does not lead to teacher licensure, however, it is the first step in the licensure process, or, in other words, the first two years of a 4-year process.  SEU’s AA in Education includes general education courses as well as 15 credit hours of beginning Education major courses all taught from a Biblical worldview, which is difficult to find in education programs at most universities.

Pathways to licensure after graduating with the AA in Education include continuing on to complete years 3 and 4 of a (4-year) Bachelor of Science in Education degree program at the main campus of Southeastern University in Lakeland (there are many education degree programs at SEU from which to choose); or transferring to a college or university in Ohio to complete years 3 and 4 of a bachelor degree in education leading to teacher licensure in the state of Ohio.  We are excited to offer this degree program as part of a pathway to teacher licensure, and we are committed to growing further opportunities for education majors on our campus in the near future.

Sample Core Courses

Introduction to Education (EDUC 2133) — This course is a study of the nature and character of American education and how it has been influenced by our social structure, social values, and history. Contemporary issues in education are explored to help provide the student with an understanding of the social foundations of education. The course also includes an orientation to teacher and educational clinical programs, introduction to subject area competencies, professional skills and competencies, benchmarks for the pre-professional level of accomplished practices for teachers, and the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

Content and Instructional Design for Educators (EDUC 2123) — This course focuses on the principles of effective instructional design and delivery in the K-12 setting. The course will cover models of effective teaching, Florida’s Educator Accomplished Practices, disciplines of writing lesson and unit plans, and state-adopted content standards (Common Core State Standards). Assessment and differentiated instruction will be covered.

Educational Psychology (EDUC 2233) — This course is a study of student diversity, the principles and philosophy of human growth and development, motivation and learning theory, and how these are applied to teaching. Included are introductions to intelligence theories, cultural issues, instructional approaches, learning taxonomies, motivation, and different assessment tools.

Instructional Technology (EDUC 3503) — This course is designed to develop skills and techniques needed for the selection, utilization, and production of classroom instructional materials and for application and integration of educational technology and media to all areas of the curriculum, appropriate to students’ developmental level.
