Each year in May, Southeastern University hosts a conference in Lakeland, Florida for its regional campus directors to cover trends in higher education as well as the next phase of growth at SEU.  This year, I traveled to The Summit conference with SEU Ohio Campus Director David Pafford.  As SEU Ohio is wrapping up our second launch year, it was an exciting time to dream about what God can and will do through the next generation of Christ-following leaders.  The following is an update from two days of high-impact training and news releases from Southeastern University.

Associate of Arts in Education Southeastern University continues to develop new degree programs. Beginning in the Fall of 2019, SEU Ohio will be one of a few regional campuses piloting an online Associate of Arts in Education degree.  For the hundreds of you who have inquired about an education major at SEU Ohio, now we have one!  The Associate of Arts in Education is a 2-year degree that prepares students to be an influencer and educator of the next generation. By itself, the Associate of Arts in Education does not lead to teacher licensure, however, it is the first step in the licensure process or, in other words, the first two years of a 4-year process.  SEU’s AA in Education includes general education courses as well as 15 credit hours of beginning education major courses all taught from a biblical worldview.

Pathways to licensure after graduating with the AA in Education include continuing on to complete years 3 and 4 of a (4-year) Bachelor of Science in Education degree program at the main campus of Southeastern University in Lakeland (there are many education degree programs at SEU from which to choose); or transferring to a college or university in Ohio to complete years 3 and 4 of a bachelor degree in education leading to teacher licensure in the state of Ohio.  We are excited to offer this degree program as part of a pathway to teacher licensure, and we are committed to growing further opportunities for education majors on our campus in the near future.

New minors  SEU has added new online minors to the College of Unrestricted Education.  SEU Ohio students can now choose from 13 minors, which include Bible, Business, Communication, Communication and Mass Media, Criminal Justice, Digital Media Design, Family Ministry Leadership, Human Services, Ministerial Leadership, Missions and Evangelism, Organizational Leadership, Pastoral Leadership, and Psychology.  Students can use their free elective courses to complete any of these 18-credit hour minors.

New tracks within the Bachelor of Science in Ministerial Leadership (BSML)  The BSML is SEU Ohio’s largest major program, and Southeastern University is expanding and refining this degree program with four new tracks that allow students to focus on different areas of ministry.  In addition to the standard Ministerial Leadership track, students can choose the Biblical Studies track—perfect for students who are preparing for seminary, the Christian Ministry track—which combines leadership training with solid Bible courses, the Worship Ministries track—for musically inclined students, and the Pastoral Care and Counseling track—for students who plan to complete a Master’s degree in counseling or a related field.

Second Place in the FIRE READY Scholarship Contest  We are pleased to announce that SEU Ohio won second place in a race to get as many students as possible financially cleared and registered for classes this fall.  This was a huge initiative to increase student retention, promote good financial stewardship, and provide returning students with a better opportunity to focus on academic excellence rather than financial aid, and we think it was a huge success.  As the second place winner, we have the opportunity to award a half-tuition scholarship to one FIRE READY student this fall.  The winning student will be announced in September.

The view from the 2019 Summit is nothing short of spectacular.  God is positioning Southeastern University on the cutting edge of higher education and experiential learning to equip the next generation of Christian leaders.  SEU Ohio is positioned for exponential growth as we prepare students from Ohio (and the Midwest) to take the gospel into the church, the marketplace, and the world.  We can’t wait to see where God leads our graduates as He uses them for His glory to advance His kingdom.  As they say, the future is so bright, we’re gonna need shades!
